Youth shines at Royal Norfolk

The largest entry for many years greeted judge Anna Minnice-Hughes at the Royal Norfolk Show for this year’s Society Southern feature show. And with the numbers came great quality, with new and young exhibitors making their presence felt among a strong field.

Miss Minnice-Hughes said it had been a pleasure to judge such a great line-up of sheep, with every class containing great sheep from top to bottom. “The standard here was exceptional and the class winners were all worthy winners in their own right.”

Taking the championship ticket was the female champion and winner of the ewe lamb class from Tessa Bustance’s Moulton, Lincolnshire-based Eaubrink flock.

This was a Barnyards Upstart daughter, BDI1502765. “This was a sharp, showy lamb correct in every way and with a great carcass to match her breed character,” explained Miss Minnice-Hughes.

The lamb had previously been female and reserve overall champion at Lincoln County Show a week earlier.

Standing reserve overall was the male champion, Henry Ashley and family’s ram lamb. This was AHL1500876, a son of Drumgooland Vintage son out of a dam by Cambwell Thunder. He was male champion at Newark earlier in the season.

Miss Minnice Hughes said the ram lamb had been an easy class winner being well fleshed with a great skin and breed character. “On the day he was pipped by the ewe lamb to the overall title, but he’s a lamb to watch for later in the year.”

Taking the reserve female championship was the winner of the old ewe class from Tessa Bustance, BDI1201959, a Matthews Rocket Man daughter out of a dam by Fordwell Piper. Meanwhile, taking the reserve male championship was Tessa Bustance’s shearling ram BDI1402618. This one is another by Barnyards Upstart and is out of a dam by Haltcliffe Sunshine.

Commenting on the overall show Miss Minnice-Hughes said it was great to see relatively new flock owners coming to the fore in a strong line-up of sheep. “It was particularly good to see a number of young, new faces around the rings and a the top end of the line-up with great quality sheep.”
