Dyfed Club Annual In-lamb Sale

It was a brave but substantial crowd that made their way through floods and wind on a terrible night to Ffairfach Mart for the second annual in lamb sale of the Dyfed Club.

The trade was solid throughout but leading the way in that regard, and for young judge Gwilym Williams in the pre sale show, was a gimmer from JE & L Davies (Teilo).

She is by Knock Upshot out of a Knock Nugget dam and traces to an Aman foundation ewe by Knock Field Marshall. Indeed only Tophill Kiwi separates the Knocks.

She is in lamb to the ram which has done so well for Teilo and Aman in his first season, the 4,800gns Deveronvale Viscount. Buying her for his Treweren flock (and backing his judgement) was Gwilym Williams at  the top price of 1080gns.

In reserve to the champion was the first prized aged ewe from Tom Evans, Welsh. She is a full sister to his 7,000gns Worcester female champion being by Mossknowe Pudsey out of Tom's Greenwood ewe. She sold in lamb to Cornmore Weed Hopper, full brother to 85,000gns Velvet Jacket, for the next top of 900gns.

Tom also lead the ewe lamb trade at 720gns for a Glenside Valhalla daughter out of a Cornerstone ewe by Cornerstone New Testament. Topping off a good night for the Evans family was selling the top price embryo pregnancy to Kenny McKeague of Ayrshire for 550gns.

Second to the champion in the shearling class was a Cwmcerrig gimmer from the Watkins family. She is by the 60,000gns Teiglum Tornado, out of Roland's Rascarrel Pepermint flushing ewe and sold to Evan Davies Rhyader for 750gns.

Dyfed Texel Breeders Club Flock Competition

For the 2015 flock competition the members of the Dyfed Texel Breeders club decided to take a break from tradition, and made the innovative step of determining the division between the large and small flocks on a production basis i.e. lamb rather than ewe numbers. The decision was taken in order to reflect the changes brought about by modern sheep breeding practices, most notably ET work.

The competition was judged by John & Linda Mellin of the Hull House flock and top honours went to the Teilo flock of John Eirian & Lynwen Davies. As well as scooping the top honours the Teilo flock also took the prize for the best crop of lambs which were sired by Springwell Ulsterboy, Deveronvale Viscount and Steddfa Ultimate.

2nd in the large flock and reserve champions was the Cwmcerrig flock of DJJ Watkins & Co, who also took the cup for the best gimmers and a share of the cup for the best Stock Ram, Eryri Van Dango (jointly owned with the Welsh flock of Tom & Selwyn Evans), which was purchased from Ruthin last year.

In order to announce the results a most enjoyable night was held at the Cottage Inn, Llandeilo, and the club would like to extend a massive thank you to John & Linda Mellin of the Hull House flock for taking their time to come down and judge our competiton.
