It was a day of domination for the Procters Farm team at the Royal Welsh, with shepherd Jeff Aiken and his wife, Jennifer, bringing out five of the six class winners under judge Charlie Boden of the Sportsmans and Mellor Vale flocks.
Topping off an exceptional day for the Procters team was the winner of the aged ewe class, PFD1101038, known at home as Procters Sexy Lady. This daughter of the 50,000gns Haddo Ringleader is out of an Annan dam by Ettrick McCoist. She was also female champion at the Royal Highland earlier this season.
Charlie Boden said the ewe had been an easy winner, exemplifying everything that was good in the modern Texel. "She has tremendous power and shape, with a great top and tremendous legs under her. She is feminine and has exceptional breed character."
Taking the day's reserve overall championship and with it the male championship was Stephen and Carolynne Williams two shear tup Cooilingel Thor. Bought at Builth Wells last September for 8000gns he was bred by the Creer family on the Isle of Man and is a son of a Ballaterson sire borrowed from fellow Isle of Man breeders Derek and Alison Kermeen, himself a Knock Pilot son and is out of a Ballaglonney Noble Lord daughter.
Charlie Boden said the tup was a great choice for reserve, with excellent fleshing and power, with plenty of style. "He's exactly what the breed needs to produce for the commercial market."
Reserve female championship honours went to The Pierce family's second prize aged ewe, PRE1200194, a Knock Powerpacker daughter out of a dam by Mitchellhill Paparazi.
The reserve male championship was another from Procters Farm, this time the ram lamb winner PFD1403604. This lamb is by the 11,000gns Tophill Union Jack and out of a Cairness dam by Sportsmans Scania.
And the Procters team continued to steal the plaudits when taking the top tickets in the remaining three classes.
Winning the shearling tup class was Tophill Union Jack, the champion from last year's Lanark sale which Procters Farm paid 11,000gns for. Sired by Knock Trident he is out of a dam by Tamnamoney Rob Roy and was the winner of the open shearling ram class at the Great Yorkshire Show earlier this month.
Taking top spot in the shearling ewes was PFD1302557, a Scholars Twenty Twelve daughter out of a dam by the 50,000gns Haddo Ringleader.
In the ewe lamb class it was PFD1403549 from Procters Farm, with this one being by Anglezarke Uno and out of a Chessy dam by Tullagh Neptune.
Jeff Aiken said it had long been his ambition to win all three female classes at the Royal Show and to have fulfilled his dream at the Royal Welsh, which saw more than 300 Texel entries in the breed's 40th anniversary year was a truly special moment. "It's been a great day and one we'll certainly not forget in a hurry. To take the breed championship was the icing on the cake of a truly great day."
