Great Yorkshire Show 2014

Sportmans shearling tup takes Great Yorkshire championship

A mammoth entry of more than 290 Texels gave judge John Mellin plenty to think about at the Great Yorkshire Show, with Mr Mellin quick to praise the depth of quality in every class.

"It has been an absolute privilege to judge such a tremendous show of sheep. From the first class to the last the quality has been superb and in both the male and female championships I had exceptional animals to pick from."

Taking the day's male and overall championship was the winner of the exhibitor bred shearling ram class from Messrs Boden and Davies, Sportsmans Upperclass. This tup, a son of the 42,000gns Tullylagan Tonka bought at Lanark in 2012, is out of a Knock ewe bought for 6000gns from Carlisle. She is herself a daughter of Cambwell Rob Roy and out of the famous HAK05034 ewe.

Mr Mellin said his champion was an exceptional Texel tup, full of flesh and power and very correct throughout. "He just stands out as a tup, with a great top, tremendous legs and outstanding breed character. It was a tough choice between him and the female champion for the overall spot, but on the day he just edged it for overall quality and fleshing."

The female champion was Gordon Gray's shearling ewe, GGH1303026. This daughter of Plasucha Tiger, the champion at the main NSA sale at Builth in 2012, is out of Tima Princess, herself a Thinacres Grenade daughter. This one was reserve female champion at the Highland, as well as interbreed champion at Stirling and reserve interbreed champion at Lesmahagow.

She came through from an exceptional gimmer class which Mr Mellin said was one of the best he'd had the pleasure of judging. "It was a great show of gimmers and the winner is everything I like in the Texel breed. She's balanced, well fleshed and retains the essential feminine characteristics I want in my ewes."

Reserve male championship honours went to the Isle of Man-based Kermode family with their winner from the performance recorded ram lamb class. This was KAO1401121, a son of Knock Trident out of a dam by Tamnamoney Moonshine. This lamb from the Orrisdale flock was another drawing praise from Mr Mellin for his character and evenness of fleshing.

And in the females it was the turn of Jeff Aiken to take the reserve championship honours on behalf of Procters Farm. This was PFD1101158, a daughter of the 50,000gns Haddo Ringleader out of a Chessy ewe by Tullagh Neptune.

Taking top spot in the aged tup class was Hull House Tiberius from William Watson. This class saw Society President and chairman Henry Gamble step in as independent judge with the eventual class winner having been bred by the judge John Mellin. Tiberius is by Castlecairn Red Arrow.

Then in the open shearling ram class the winner was the 16,000gns Tophill Union Jack from Procters Farm. He's by Knock Trident and out of a Tamnamoney Rob Roy daughter.

Leading the way in the open ram lamb class was Peter Woof with his lamb, WPS1400590. This one is a son of Anglezarke Uno out of a dam by Sportsmans Tremendous II.

In the ewe lambs it was a win for Charlie Boden with his ewe lamb BCM140285, a Strathbogie Terminator daughter from the Mellor Vale flock. She's out of a dam Baltier Panther.
