The Northern Ireland Texel Young Breeders Club reflects back on 2014 while preparing events for the incoming year. Last year was an eventful year for the young breeders.
The year was kick started with the annual general meeting and go-karting night at Raceview in Ballymena. Good attendance from the club members permitted a junior and senior competition around the track. A short interval for refreshments allowed the Annual General Meeting to take place. Adrian Liggett opened the meeting with the chairman’s welcome, followed by the election of the 2013 committee as follows
Club President- Nigel Hamill
Club Chairman - James Wilkinson
Vice-Chairman- Graham Foster
Club Secretary- Christina McCollam
Assistant Secretary and P.R.O- Claire Beacom
Club Treasurer- Andrew Hamill
N.I Club Junior Representative- Richard Reynolds
Committee members- Adrian Liggett, Andrew Kennedy, David Chestnutt, Johnathan Hammond Nathan Armstrong and Stephanie McCollam.
Adrian Liggett the regional representative for the Texel Youth Development Programme gave a brief outline of their first meeting and the aims that they hope to achieve in the future. This is the first year of the programme so the Northern Ireland Texel Young Breeders are keen to get involved to promote the breed. James Wilkinson then brought the meeting to a close to allow the eager racers back to the track. It was stiff competition with the competitiveness levels rising. Results from the junior race were, 1st Mathew French, 2nd Thomas McNeill and 3rd Gareth Henderson. The senior races concluded 1st David Chestnutt, 2nd Richard McMullan and 3rd Richard Reynolds.
Lambing season began and took over the young breeders' time for a few months. Then the RUAS Balmoral Show 2014 saw the start of the showing season. There was a good turn out with both junior and senior classes being judged by John McKerrow (Grougfoot Texels). The results from the junior young handler class were 1st James McCombe, 2nd Mark Breen, 3rdMartin McConville. David Chestnutt was 1st in the senior class with Graham Foster 2nd and Nathan Armstrong 3rd. Hannah McCollum was doing it for the girls coming in a close 4th. Once again the young breeders held a guess the weight competition with Texel cross lambs, kindly supplied by the Jones’ Family Belfast. Guessing the correct weight was Harry Thompson from Randalstown.
After an excellent year at Antrim Agricultural Show last year the Texel Young Breeders returned with their Young Handler Competition, which is kindly sponsored by Dennis Hamill. Claire Beacom (Castleknowe) was the judge of the ewe lamb and ram lamb classes, she did not have an easy job with a good turnout of exhibitors for both classes. The ram lamb class results were, 1st Bailie O’Conner 2nd Robbie Foster and 3rd Holly Porter. The ewe lamb class concluded 1st Robbie Foster 2nd Ben Robinson and 3rd James McCombe. First and second from each class were then put forward for the championship which was judged by Gordon Grey (Ettrick). He agreed it was stiff competition and after putting the young breeders through their paces awarded the Hamill Perpetual Cup to Robbie Foster and reserve champion to Bailie O’Connor.
Next up on the calendar was the Texel Club Open Night at Ballynahone Texel’s, Tobermore. Along with the usual BBQ feast which was supplied by Millars Meats Ballyclare, the Young Breeders ran a sports night filled with races and games. To begin the fun the young ones had a kick about with the football while their parents had a look around the impressive Ballynahone Flock. The little ones started with different running races followed by their favourite races, the egg and spoon and the sack race. When they had finished and received all their prizes it was the turn of the older ones. The races started off very competitively with them all wanting to reach the finish line first. The messing started when they were divided into groups of four for the BIG sack race. A few eggs were cracked in the egg and spoon and then they got into pairs for the final three legged race and the wheel barrow race. The rodeo sheep was another highlight for the young breeders who took it in turn to see who could hold on the longest to beat the ram. Overall the Open Night was a huge success and we would like to thank everyone that got involved.
The young breeders gathered together at the NI Texel Premier Sale at Ballymena. The young breeders ram lamb class was judged by Carol Anne Warnock placing Mark Breen first, Andrew Kennedy second and Andrew Fyffe third. This was the third year of the Elite Ewe Lamb class for the young breeders, which Barry Farrell kindly came to judge. He placed a Drumgooland ewe lamb first for Bailie O’Connor, Jack Gault second and David Chestnut third. Later in the sale ring David Chestnutt received the top price for his ewe lamb, with the young breeders getting an average of £945 for their ewe lambs.
This was the first year for the Texel export sale at Balmoral Park. The young breeders ram lamb class was judged by Pat Farrell who placed Richard Reynolds first, Andrew Fyffe second and Owen & Liam Donohoe third. Richard Reynolds, Killyvolgan lamb later went on to become reserve male champion and topped the prices of the day at £4,410 to Paul O’Connor.
The Texel dinner was a great night’s craic for the young handlers, with quizzes, dancing and awards. Nigel Hamill the President of the Young Breeders awarded the Texel Young Breeders award for 2014 to Claire Beacom who is PRO and assistant secretary for the Young Breeders Club. The night also gave members a chance to buy the eagerly awaited Texel Breeders Year DVD which features many of the young breeders. The Young Breeders Club also launched their new merchandise in the form of the blue and yellow hoodies, body warmers and coats, which are all still available to order.
The Young Breeders ended their successful year with another trip to Lanark’s Select Seven sale. They enjoyed the sale with some members making a few purchases to take home to Northern Ireland. Later that evening they enjoyed a dinner with the select seven hosts and partied into the early hours of Sunday morning.
The Young Breeders look forward to another busy year in 2015 with the AGM and go-karting night starting it all off. If anyone under 30 is interested in Texel sheep and becoming a NITYB member, please contact Club Secretary Christina McCollam on 078 1331 8172 or add us on Facebook Texel Young Breeders NI for more information on up and coming events.
