AGM & Social Weekend 2013

Texel Sheep Society 37th Annual General Meeting & Social Weekend 2013

The Vale Resort, Vale of Glamorgan

The 2013 AGM and social weekend began with a bang - literally! After being serenaded by a Welsh harpist during the drinks reception we were privileged to view the Vale Resorts spectacular annual firework display from our own private balcony prior to Friday’s welcome dinner.

Chairman of the South Wales Texel Breeders Club, Deri Morgan, welcomed all to the Vale before a delicious dinner was served followed by a demonstration of Twmpath dancing, a Welsh version of barn dancing, before long the Members were up on their feet joining in - not all voluntarily!

On Saturday morning there was a choice of how to fill the day, a trip to St Fagans living history museum, a shopping trip into Cardiff, flock visits to Aman and Cwmcerrig, which included the highly impressive Cwmcerrig farm shop. Alternatively you could spend a day in the hotel relaxing with a round of golf, Spa treatment, rugby player spotting or simply doing nothing.

By all accounts Cardiff impressed, the Flock visits were excellent and St Fagans well worth visiting. Those remaining at the hotel enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere and glimpses of famous players.

The AGM was very well attended and once business was concluded our Chief Executive wished all a very enjoyable dinner dance.

Later that evening to the accompaniment of the Bargoed Male Welsh Voice Choir, the guests enjoyed pre-dinner drinks before being served another delicious meal.

Following dinner, Deri Morgan (South Wales Club Chairman), presented various awards including the South Wales Club Flock Competition awards and the South Wales Club Person of the Year - this award was presented to Rhodri Jones (grandson of the late Powell Jones, Llanthomas).

Rhodri Jones - South Wales Club Person of the Year 2013

Deri said “Rhodri has worked exceptionally hard as a club member doing an excellent job as a publicity officer, showing extensively and having an encyclopaedic knowledge of the breed - all the more impressive as he is only 17”.

Our Chairman & President, Nick Tavernor, presented the Society awards and thanked retiring Directors, Alan Clark, Alwyn Phillips and Robert Cartledge. Nick announced his Presidents awards for dedication and support to the Texel Society and the breed, presenting to Robert Watts (Rowden) and a posthumous award to the late Tommy MacTaggart. He then thanked all for their support during his term as Chairman and handed the reins over to Henry Gamble (Springwell), to begin his two year term as Chairman. Henry proudly awarded Nick a crystal rose bowl to mark his two year chairmanship, acknowledging the progression made by the Society over the past two years. Henry introduced his Vice Chairman, David McKerrow (Nochnary flock). The Sire of the Year 2013 trophy was presented to James Innes for Strathbogie Terminator.
The South Wales Air Ambulance representative gave a short speech prior to the Charity auction organised by the South Wales Club. The event proved very popular, aided no doubt by the excellent auctioneering skills of guests Jimmy Warnock (Watchknowe flock), and Ashley Simmonds (Clee, Tompkinson & Francis). One pot of pansies even got auctioned twice! The total amount raised, including the match funding from Barclays and Gift Aid, was £2,537.60.

The Band ‘Perfect Day’ began playing and many took to the floor. The ‘usual suspects’ sat in the piano bar till the wee small hours being entertained by the James Innes Liberace tribute act before heading off to bed near dawn.

It was a tremendous weekend with new friends made and old friendships re-established. It was good to see so many familiar faces. On behalf of the South Wales Club Deri Morgan said, “the Club is extremely grateful for the support received from Allflex, Mary Griese, Agri-Lloyd, Clee, Tompkinson & Francis, Welshpool Livestock sales and McCartneys for their various support and sponsorship”.

The Society thanks all that attended and looks forward to meeting again in 2014.
